Introductory Project-Based Learning (PBL)
Description of session
This session is a half-day introduction to show participants how PBL is an effective way for students to learn and develop deeper learning of competencies required for success in college, career, and civic life. Participants will learn how PBL engages students' hearts and minds while providing real-world relevance for learning with strategies and approaches that are equitable to all learners.
Experienced PBL practitioner Jorge Valenzuela will share classroom examples, best practices, and resources that show how teachers of all grades and content areas can offer students a learning experience that invites thoughtful investigation, problem-solving, constructive critique, cross-curricular connections and to the broader world. Moreover, participants will be encouraged to continue their PBL journey with PBLWorks.
How to Develop Computational Thinkers
Description of session
Computational thinking (CT) is a higher order problem-solving and cross-curricular skill. As CT is understandable to both machines and humans, in this session educators will learn to draw on familiar concepts that connect their previous learning to foundational computer science (CS) practices that involve designing solutions that leverage the power of computing.
Join this session with educational coach Jorge Valenzuela. Jorge will share authentic examples, best practices, and resources for helping any educator get started with mastering CT.
Teachers will experience this session as learners and will learn the four elements of CT and correlate them to their content areas. This will be done by analyzing an article on CT and then synthesizing its contents into an artifact that they will create collaboratively (within groups). They will also present their learning in presentation format and through role play. Strategies applied in this workshop can be replicated in the classroom and with learners of all ages.
Learn Coding in a STEAM Design Challenge
Description of session
Learn to apply foundational coding skills to game based coding using littleBits! In this session, educators will participate in a STEAM design challenge and will design and build a game that is manipulated by code using Google Blockly Based coding blocks.
Join this session with educational coach and littleBits lead educator Jorge Valenzuela. Jorge will share curriculum, best practices, and facilitation tips for helping any educator get started in learning how to master game-based coding in their classroom.
Teachers will experience this session as learners and will learn the intersection between model making, game-based design using littleBits, the Code Kit app, and art supplies! They will also present their learning in presentation format and through demonstration. Strategies applied in this workshop can be replicated in the classroom and with learners of all ages.
Computer Science Education
Like all initiatives in education, incorporating Computer Science (CS) topics (i.e., computational thinking and coding) into instruction requires educators to take practical steps to learning concepts and also a system(s) for measuring their progress when participating in professional development and or working with students. The goal of this professional development series is to help educators employ best practices for teaching learners’ core CS concepts and practices along with the use of technology tools (i.e., electronics) during either inquiry or design challenges. This can be done in many classrooms across various content/program areas by engaging learners experientially in these complex skills through design and inquiry practices.
Join a session with master teacher Jorge Valenzuela. Jorge shares authentic examples, best practices, and resources for helping any educator get started with mastering CS topics and the use of edtech. Exemplary programs and models are also highlighted for all educators.
The Engineering Design Process (EDP) is a systematic approach that engineers use as a guide during the problem-solving process. Engineers repeat the steps as needed, making improvements to designs before sharing the solution(s). K-12 educators will learn methods for implementing the EDP with their learners within a cooperative learning environment and in the context of conceptual model making. Participants will also learn how to infuse electronics (like robotics, etc.) and microcontrollers (like Arduino and Raspberry Pi) into engineering design challenges.
Join a session with master teacher Jorge Valenzuela. Jorge shares authentic examples, best practices, and resources for helping any educator get started with mastering STEM/STEAM projects and the effective use of tech tools. Exemplary programs and models are also highlighted for all educators.
Educators attending this two-day session learn to enhance their curriculum development practices by applying the essentials of backward design unit planning. Both singleton teachers or grade level teams are coached through curriculum design that addresses interdisciplinary student learning, performance-based assessment(s) and strategies that engage diverse learners. Curriculum developed in this session can be delivered both individually or through a collaborative team approach.
Lifelong Learning Defined
Inevitably both loss and uncertainty are part of life and the human experience. None of us can escape it — nor should we try to. Instead, we should become lifelong learners to be able to glean every important lesson from our day to day living. At LLD we feel strongly that the personal experience each of us has is indeed the one we need to be able to grow and evolve into the best version of ourselves possible. But how can we know this for sure? Your personal experiences are what you need to improve because they are happening to you.
Join a session with master teacher and educational coach, Jorge Valenzuela. Jorge will share authentic examples, best practices, and resources for helping any educator get started with becoming a lifelong learner, finding and pursuing their passion and living their best life possible. Exemplary resources and models will be highlighted and provided to all attendees.
